West Florida Area Health Education Center (WFAHEC) - New Directions in Community Health

Oral Health Tobacco Services

WFAHEC has developed a tobacco training program specific to the dental community.  We employ a dental hygienist with over 25 years of clinical experience who can train dental providers to more effectively intervene with their patients about tobacco use.   We understand that dental providers build and nurture relationships with each and every person that enters their operatory and the Brief Tobacco Intervention is a vital component to add to the patient care portfolio.

Additionally, WFAHEC has trained and equipped cessation counselors in your area who offer group and individual programs tailored specifically to each person’s needs and who can assist with all phases of implementation of this program.  We can provide the resources and support to help you provide your patients with information and assistance.

Along with training services, we realize the importance of early detection of oral cancer and are committed to raising the awareness of this forgotten disease.  WFAHEC is placing adjunct oral mucosal technology in healthcare clinics and institutions, giving providers the ability to screen patients who are often high risk for the disease.  The correlation between tobacco and oral cancer is undeniable.  The addition of technology allows practitioners a rare opportunity to communicate with their patients directly, literally “in their face”.  Besides providing much needed screening, the technology promotes tobacco cessation as a key factor to lower the risk for disease and further encourages participation in WFAHEC’s many tobacco cessation programs.
