ATTAC-IT
Formerly known as PIPSA
(Partners in Prevention of Substance Abuse)
Program description
Engaging Future Healthcare Professionals: The AHEC Tobacco
Training and Cessation (ATTAC-IT) Program will train health
professions students all across the state. The ATTAC-IT Program
is a comprehensive instructional program designed to teach health
professions students about tobacco, help them develop professional
skills necessary to address its use with their patients and have them
serve as role models while educating youth about the dangers of
tobacco.
ATTAC-IT brings health professions students together to learn
about tobacco abuse, prevention and cessation issues. Students who
participate in this program benefit from an increased understanding of
the pharmacology of nicotine, tobacco use, and drug delivery systems;
increased awareness of the effects of smoking and tobacco use;
improved knowledge of how to help patients change unhealthy behaviors;
and develop or enhance skills for dealing with dependent/addicted
patients.
Health professions students then visit designated middle schools
throughout our four county service area with an anti-tobacco message.
Using a lesson plan of creative teaching methods, learning activities,
and games provided to them by AHEC, students are deployed into middle
schools where they serve as role models while teaching middle school
children about the consequences of tobacco use.
