Clinical Training
West Florida AHEC coordinates the placement of health professions
students in rural and medically underserved rotations to expose them
to the rewards and challenges of working with the medically needy –
and possibly influence their career decisions. Research shows that
health profession students who rotate through medically underserved
sites are more likely to return to those communities to practice.
- According to the 2000 United States Census, almost half (33 out
of 67) of all counties in Florida are rural.
- There are numerous rural hospitals in Florida.
- Rural hospitals and community clinics are often the only means
of delivering quality health care to the residents of rural
communities.
- Rural hospitals and community clinics often have trouble
recruiting health professionals.
